Putin congratulates Lukashenko on successful conduct of referendum

MOSCOW, 11 March (BelTA) - Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko on the successful conduct of the referendum as they two leaders met in Moscow on 11 March, BelTA has learned.

"We meet regularly, exchange information by phone. We adjust our actions. But before we start out talks today, I would like to congratulate you on the successful conduct of the referendum, the result of which was the introduction of amendments to the Constitution," Vladimir Putin said.

The Russian president took note of the high turnout at the polling stations and Belarusians’ support.

“One and a half percent more than we had in the recent presidential election,” said Aleksandr Lukashenko.

“I think that the political process that you have initiated, the dialogue that you are conducting with the people is extremely important in order to make the situation stable and sustainable. Only in this situation can we talk about economic development,” the Russian president added.
